II. —Adj. Qui l'emporte en supériorité, en puissance ou en importance. Synon. dominant, majeur, primordial. Caractère, goût, rapport, souci, prédominant; emploi prédominant; activité, influence, occupation, passion prédominante. Les oiseaux, dont la vue est le sens prédominant (CABANIS, Rapp. phys. et mor., t.2, 1808, p.337). Après avoir jugé que tel défaut, prédominant chez l'une, était heureusement absent de l'autre, il verra que ce défaut avait pour contre-partie une qualité précieuse (PROUST, Prisonn., 1922, p.66). Le Royaume-Uni va marquer un avantage sur son concurrent et conquérir sur le marché mondial une position commerciale prédominante (GOLDSCHMIDT, Avent. atom., 1962, p.74).
